Angels and devils...

I love this little girl more than anything, but sometimes I think she has one of these on each shoulder, telling her to do things - mostly things she shouldn't do.

The angel....

The devillish imp...

Let's just say that the angelic voice of reason saves her cute little heiny a lot of the time.

Crunch, crunch

Now that everyone has assured me that I am not the only mother with a child that consumes cat food, and that she will survive, I can get back to blogging.

Yesterday I had the joy of taking Lily outside to play in the puddles. There is nothing better than standing in the water, teaching your kid how to splash in rubber boots. Well, she had rubber boots. I need some. But I want the big kid version of these ones:

Even more fun was seeing the look on the face of the guy who walked by when I was showing her how to jump in the puddles. Huge grin - I think we made his day.

Lily and I watched the water go down the drain. She was fascinated by the movement of the water - I threw some dried grass bits into the water, and she watched as the blades made their way to the sewer grate. She even went and grabbed some and tried to throw it in.

After that, more splashing, and then she sat in the puddle. Not once, not twice, but three times. I really need to get to MEC to get her a Newt suit. Say it, it's fun!

Newt. Suit.

What the heck is a Newt suit? This:

She was quite shocked at how cold the water was - there was at least 2 inches of solid ice under the slush and water. That made for a cold baby. We went in for a warm lunch and one of Lily's favorite treats, warm milk with Starbuck's Gingerbread syrup. Lily is learning about coffee shops - she has her own kid's tumbler from Starbuck's. We bought that on Thursday - can't skip Starbucks! I forgot that she makes a giant mess of herself when she has hot chocolate there, and had to clean a lot of chocolate off the stroller, her coat, her mittens, her face and her stroller blanket. Next time she's getting a tumbler of warm milk with a flavor shot. Still messy, but plain old milk is easier to get out of a white blanket (I know, what was I thinking taking a white blanket out in spring...) than cocoa syrup and milk. I don't think that Bryan's quest to ensure Lily hates coffee as much as he does, is going to work.

When I was small, I can remember drinking milky coffee at my grandma's. It was probably 1 part coffee to 20 parts milk, but the taste stuck. All things in moderation. It won't hurt her, and we make sure the rest of her diet is relatively healthy and junk free.

We were asked this week about Easter, and whether or not she can have any chocolate at Easter. She's too little to know about the Easter Bunny, so we can skip it this year. Next year she can ask us why the Easter Bunny clucks like a chicken.

Every child has a bit of the devil in them.

So does every puppy. Lily and Molly the Labrador are often compared. For instance, as they play, we use pretty much the same set of commands (for lack of a better word).

Sit down.
Leave it.
Not for dogs/babies.
No jumping.
No biting.
Gentle.

When Molly is in a mischievious mood, you can usually tell, as one of her ears turns inside out and doesn't go back. And if both are inside out, it's best just to walk away.

Lily's telltale sign? Her right eyebrow, as faint as it is, sticks straight up. This reminds me of my grandpa - his pointed straight up most of the time, and he had quite the devillish streak in him!

I didn't check in the morning, but I'm pretty sure Lily's eyebrow was pointing up all day. She started the day by taking one of her teddy bears off the shelf, taking it to the bathroom and tossing it straight into the toilet. Then she looked at me and said 'Bath?'.

Yes, Teddy is getting a bath, but not the fun kind.

I volunteered to take Evan for the evening, as his mom was working the election. I hopped in the car and went to get him from daycare. I returned to a quiet house, as Lily was on take two of her afternoon nap. I saw the cat's food and water dishes up on the counter. And looked down to a fairly cross cat. While I was gone, Lily had a snack.

Yes folks, my kid eats cat food.

Her impishness continued - milk dumped on her tray during dinner. Telling me she wanted a ba-BA-ba, further encouraging Evan to tell me he wanted a na-na. If they would just talk amongst themselves, they would have the word! Or they would call it a na-BA-na. I don't understand how their minds work.

Evan was very helpful during dinner, pointing out that Lily had dropped her plate, carrots, banana and ravioli on the floor. Uh-Oh. Uh-Oh. Nana? Uh-Oh.

After dinner, I heard a strange tap tap tap noise. I peeked around the corner to find Lily whacking Evan in the back of the head with a plastic measuring cup. I told her to stop - she dropped the cup. Evan, being in a helpful mood, picked it up and handed it back to Lily. Whack.

Sigh.

All cleaned up, I sat down with the kids to watch them wreak havoc on my living room. Evan decided to climb up on a footstool, and when I told him to get down, Lily decided to follow Evan's previous helpful example and assist. She went over, told him "Down" and grabbed him by the waist and hauled him to the floor. (I think Keltie's dad Andy was accurate when he dubbed the two of them the Linebacker and the Dancer.)

It's a good thing he wasn't at 100% (he has a snotty cold) because he's pretty rambunctious when he's healthy. The last few times we've had Evan here he has been a bit under the weather. Lily is going to have to learn to play nice. Considering her usual playmate is a Lab, she does fairly well. She knows how to bait and switch a toy, and doesn't get too upset when a toy is taken from her. Molly is great at the 'drive by' - she wanders through the room and takes a toy from Lily without even pausing. Lily tried that with Evan, but he was a bit smarter than she counted on, because he followed her to reclaim the toys he lost. A full strength Evan vs a full strength Lily would probably result in several time outs. Mostly for me, maybe a couple for the kids.

Today has been better - she ate more of her green crayon this morning, but hasn't thrown anything in the toilet.
