Silver Bells

City sidewalk, busy sidewalks

dressed in holiday style.

In the air there's a feeling of Christmas.

Children laughing, people passing,

meeting smile after smile,

And on every street corner you'll hear:

Silver bells, silver bells,

It's Christmas time in the city.

Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,

soon it will be Christmas day.

City street lights, even stop lights,

blink a bright red and green,

As the shoppers rush home with their treasures.

Hear the snow crunch, see the kids bunch,

This is Santa's big scene,

And above all this bustle you'll hear:

Silver bells, silver bells,

It's Christmas time in the city.

Ring-a-ling, hear them ring,

soon it will be Christmas day.

I hadn't thought of this in ages, but this Christmas memory came to me today.

When I was a little girl, my grandma and grandpa would take us downtown to look at the animated Christmas window displays at Woodward's Department store. Afterwards, we would come home, and grandma would make Carnation hot chocolate (always milk chocolate!) and we would make icing for her famous shortbread cookies. Grandma had all the Christmas albums of the day, but Silver Bells is the one that I remember. Those were the days of vinyl, so Grandma had to carefully place the needle on the spinning record, to get it at just the right spot.

Merry Christmas one and all - enjoy the next couple of days with your loved ones.

God Bless.
